Tooth Removal
A Dental extraction (also referred to as tooth extraction, exodontia, exodontics,
or informally, tooth pulling) is the removal of teeth from the dental alveolus (socket)
in the alveolar bone. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, but most
commonly to remove teeth which have become unrestorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease
or dental trauma, especially when they are associated with toothache.
There are two types of extractions:
• A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth.
• A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure. It is used if a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet. Surgical extractions is mostly needed for third molars. Wisdom teeth likely become impacted because of a mismatch between the size of the teeth and the size of the jaw. Infection resulting from impacted wisdom teeth can be initially treated with antibiotics, local debridement or soft tissue surgery of the gum tissue overlying the tooth. Over time, most of these treatments tend to fail and patients develop recurrent symptoms. The most common treatment is wisdom tooth removal.
